Online teacher toolkit: Free apps to promote student engagement

In this presentation, I reflected on the challenges of translating well-loved face-to-face activities into the online environment and shared examples of how I’ve navigated these moments in my own practice. The core message was simple: success often comes down to finding the right tool (or creatively repurposing one to meet the demands of an online classroom!)
I likened digital tools to a teacher’s essential instruments — much like a chef’s knives or a doctor’s stethoscope — and shared some of the tools I relied on the most as a language educator. I focused on free online apps that support collaboration and foster a sense of presence and belonging, highlighting how thoughtfully selected tools can help recreate the interactive, human aspects of learning even when delivered virtually.
